Like most things in the Internet age, HeadOn became popular thanks to an unbearably annoying commercial that went viral. While the original product is made almost entirely of wax and cannot be backed by any scientific research, more than six million tubes were sold for $8 each.

HeadOn's notoriety came in part because of its advertisements on cable and daytime programming on broadcast television which consisted of using only the tagline "HeadOn. Apply directly to the forehead", stated three times in succession, accompanied by a video of a model using the product without ever directly stating the product's purpose.

The product has become an internet meme, and was heavily parodied in films.
