Imagine explaining to a skeptical investor that you plan to sell 1 million fishless aquariums. Well, Ecosphere Associates, Inc. has sold almost 1 million "Ecospheres", which are sealed blown-glass miniature aquariums. Instead of fish, they contain shrimp as part of a self-sustaining closed ecological system.

According to Wikipedia, "At room temperature, and with only low inputs of light, the algae produce oxygen which supports the shrimp and bacteria. Bacteria break down the shrimps' wastes. The breakdown products provide nutrients to the algae and bacteria upon which the shrimp feed. The manufacturer states that shrimp live in the EcoSphere for an average of 2 to 3 years, and are known to live over 10 years."

Hmm... In 1984, the first Ecospheres (then called "Space Probes") were being sold for $149 each, plus $4 for shipping. As of January 2017, prices for each Ecosphere range from $79.99 to $489.99.
